Reading:
In reading we are going back to revisit a 1st Grade Unit that students would have ended the year with.  The unit helps students learn about the importance of characters in a book, holding the story across many pages or chapter, and thinking about the lessons learned in a book. Book bags will not be sent home until the second week of school.  Please be patient with me as I work to help your child find "just-right" books to read.  Remember, you can always read a book to your student...that counts as their reading time too!! Reading at home should foster the love of reading and not become a fight, if that happens take the night off from reading.

Writing:
As we start the year off in writing we wanted to focus on ways we can build students up to feel more successful writing outside of school.
We are going to explore the many ways people write daily:
--Why they write?
--What they write?
--Who they write for?
--How they prepare to write?
--And tools they use to write?
(And at the end of the week we'll share our work with you!!)

Math:
In math we will spend the week building routines and habits.  More importantly we will have lessons around growth mindset.  We want students to see that it's important to take risks.  When we take risks we learn and grow...even if we make mistakes!

Books we'll be reading:
Over the course of our first week we will be reading many book written for students on social distancing, mask wearing, and germs.  The purpose of these books aren't to scare kids but to help them understand.  By reading these books it allows for any questions the students may have.
In addition literature is a great way for students to gain a better understanding, allowing them to be more resilient towards the situation we are living in.

Ask your student about the books they are reading at school :).
